We Tested 178 Knives
to Make the Perfect
Set

4 Years, 3 Continents, 24 Factories, and 1,000 Man-Hours Went into Making a Knife That Actually Stays Sharp

Why Does a Great Set of Knives Have to Cost So Much?

That’s the question Misen Founder, Omar Rada, asked when he was looking to upgrade his dull knife and found the only options to be cheap crap or pricey quality.

Most people would just pick one and move on. Omar spent the next four years visiting 24 factories across three continents testing over 178 knives to find out why good knives are so expensive, and how to make a better set without the price tag.

Why Do Knife Sets Come with So Many Knives?

Why Do Knife Sets Come with So Many Knives?

Mostly so brands can sell you stuff you don’t need and jack up prices. We surveyed 1,000 people and most said they use three knives, max. And yet most knife sets come with seven or more knives. Do you really need two sizes of boning knives?

When we spoke with factories, we found out most brands use inferior steels and raise prices by just loading sets up with knives you don’t need and will never use.

The Right Number of Knives Means Nothing If The Knives Aren’t Good

That’s why we use a better steel to ensure our knives stay sharp.

Most Knife Makers Hate the Steel We Use. And That’s Good for You.

We use a pro-grade Japanese Steel called AUS-10 because it has 2.5x more carbon than other steels. Carbon is the single most important factor in giving knives strength and durability.

So why is it so uncommon in knives? Because it’s more expensive. So most manufacturers will use a more commonly found steel to cut costs. But don’t worry, they’d never pass those savings along to you.

We Could Charge $300 for This Set

Instead, we charge half of that by cutting out middlemen and passing those savings on to you. Big retailers have big markups. More people in the supply chain means more people needing a cut of the pie. So prices go up, and you’re the one paying for it. That’s why we choose to sell directly.

Anyone Can Say Their Knives are Better. We Prove it with Testing.

We spent thousands of hours testing our knives in test kitchens and real homes to ensure we can back up everything we claim.

The Sharpness Longevity Test

A great knife should stay sharp right? No one on our team wanted to volunteer their arms to chop for days on end. So we got some machines to help out.

We’re Even Proud of Our 1-Star Reviews

We have thousands of 5-star reviews. But we think our 1-star reviews do a great job of explaining just how sharp this knife is.

Awesome knife! But have to give it 1-star. You should warn people how sharp this thing is! I cut the crap out of my finger the first time I used it!!!

Maybe it’s my fault, but a knife shouldn’t just cut you like this if you gently touch the blade.

Dig Deeper into the Science of What Makes Misen Better

We’re sure you have questions. Most people do. Here are the most common (and real) questions people usually have before buying Misen knives.

Seriously, there must be something worse about your knives compared to Wusthof? How else can you charge half the price?

We’re also skeptical too of companies that promise the same quality as known brands at half the price. But if you don’t trust us, Google “AUS-10 Steel” and see for yourself. We spent more than over 4 years testing hundreds of knives to build the perfect one at the ideal price. Selling directly means we don’t have to pay big box stores to carry our products. By cutting them out, we can use the same materials and charge 30-50% less!

I’ve never heard of Misen before. Why should I trust you?

We don’t trust websites either. I mean, don’t all of them say their products are incredible? Even if you haven’t heard of us, we’re certainly not new. We’ve been making and selling knives for 10 years. We’re a small but passionate team of pro and home chefs based out of Brooklyn. We started Misen because we love cooking and want to share that joy with anyone and everyone who has to cook. We know good tools make a big difference, but more importantly, you shouldn’t have to pay a lot to get the good stuff. We may be kitchen gear nerds in our souls, but we’re customers who demand great value first and foremost. Give us a try. If you don’t like our knife, just send it back.

Do these knives require special care?

No! We’re pretty busy and designed a knife that actually requires very little care. Because it stays sharp for so long, you really don’t have to do much. Just avoid putting it in the dishwasher and you should be good to go. (But even if you do put it in the dishwasher by accident, don’t worry —- it won’t fall apart).

Doesn’t every company on earth claim their stuff is better?

Yep! That’s why we tend to let our reviews do the talking. At Misen, our goal is to make great products and sell them for fair and honest prices. That’s what value means to us. There are no other companies selling premium AUS-10 steel knives for $75. If you find one let us know so we can try them out.

Claiming your knife is safer sounds a little like BS to me.

Hey, that’s not even a question. But we’ll play along. It may sound counter-intuitive to say a sharp knife is safer, but most accidents happen when knives go dull. On a microscopic level, dull knife blades actually start to curve. So over time you start to apply more and more force to cut through those veggies, and before you know it, you push too hard and the knife turns right into your fingers instead of that onion. Our steel stays sharper for much longer than other knives thanks to the copious amounts of carbon. By staying sharper longer, you’re not just making it easier to cut foods. You’re being safer too.
